No-Touch and Hands-Free Hardware to Prevent Spread of Germs

Expect to see more focus on less touching. Designers are rethinking the basic functionality of some of the most ordinary parts. Just a few months ago, most people would hardly think twice about using a door handle or speaking face to face with a cashier. Now we are conscious of these activities and interior designers and industrial designers have to reverse engineer these routine behavioral practices with a new set of fundamental guidelines.

Door Handles, Cabinet Handles, and Drawer Pulls are some of the biggest culprits and are some of the first to reinvent the wheel. We see doctors and nurses wash up before surgery and then back out of a doorway, hands in the air, trying not to make any contact on the way out since that would require them to replace their gloves or wash their hands again. Interesting. But it makes sense, they wouldn’t want to contaminate a patient who is being treated. Most people aren’t performing acts that would require that level of sterilization to protect one another. But does that make it any less important? We spread and share germs on these handles for doors and drawers. Why not protect them with antimicrobial finishes that kill germs on contact? Or alternative ways of opening them? New Door Handle Cuffs act as a forearm shield to open the door without using your hands.

Lower cabinets can be opened with repurposed drawer pulls that are mounted on the underside of the cabinet and can be opened using the tip of your shoe. This is especially helpful in cabinets where trash cans are held so you can open the door and throw away your trash ‘hands-free’ without spilling your trash on the way into the receptacle. Perhaps this level of consideration of health and safety hazards, even amongst the healthy, will aid in the prevention of the spread of bacteria that will ultimately improve conditions at work and in commercial spaces.
