Meet Mockett’s Design Competition Winners

Congratulations to Hannah Eckersley and Michael Nelson! For an unprecedented third year in a row, we have received winning entries from students in the Industrial Design Program at Appalachian State University. Last year, we had a wonderful opportunity to meet the instructor behind it all, Professor Michael Rall, and we are thrilled to see that he is still using our little contest as part of his senior project curriculum to give real-world design project assignments to his class. Lots of excitement brewing in the mountain town of Boone, NC! We’d like to introduce you to our latest winners:

Hannah Eckersley - Ar Deco Coat Hook

“I am a senior Industrial Design major with a concentration in Product Design and a minor in Apparel Design and Merchandising at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. I found out about the competition through a project for my Product design studio 3 class; we were given two weeks to come up with a product that encompassed Mockett’s brand language which we would enter into the competition.

Since the goal of the project was to create something that represented Mockett’s brand I really tried to understand the brand language and overall feel of the products on their website. Throughout my design process I was inspired by different Art Deco elements; some works I frequently looked at for inspiration were the Empire State building and old jazz club posters. Winning the competition, for me, is a boost of confidence knowing that when I graduate from Appalachian State University in May of 2019 I will be able to make it as a successful designer! I would definitely recommend anyone and everyone to enter into this competition because it is such a great opportunity for students and professionals to get their designs out there.”

Michael Nelson – Floor Wire Manager

“My name is Michael Nelson, I am a senior industrial design student at Appalachian State University. I am also a designer at Pneuma Respiratory, a pharmaceutical company developing the first breath-activated digital inhaler for delivery of drugs to the lungs for Asthma, COPD and other applications.

I was informed about the Mockett Design Competition by my professor Michael Rall, who for the past 3 years has had his students design a product for the Mockett Design Competition. I was inspired to make this piece while I was doing research into Mockett's design catalog to find areas of the office they didn’t have a product for. I had been researching for a while so I needed to stretch my legs under my desk. I accidently kicked the power strip that was lying right next to my feet and unplugged my computer's power cable! It was a Jimmy Neutron brain blast moment, I realized how often power strips are placed directly under computer desks dangerously close to users feet yet there is no product that protects and manages the power strip. I then set out to design a product that elegantly protects power strips from accidental kicks, manages wires, and acts as a foot rest

I learned that I won the Mockett Design Competition while I was sick with the flu. It was the best medicine and the excitement has yet to fade. I worked so hard to design this product and I am extremely honored to have Mockett recognize its merit. I can’t wait for it to be on the market and have people using it in offices and schools. I highly recommend every designer enter the next design competition. It's a great opportunity to practice your design skills, and there's a chance you might win!”

Congratulations to Hannah and Michael for their brilliant deigns and for telling us about their design experience! We are just as excited as you are to bring these products to market.

Feeling inspired yet? Be sure to enter our 35th Annual Design Competition which closes on September 3, 2019. Good luck!
