Spring Cleaning: Office

Spring is here and it’s cleaning time! You can start by cleaning your work space - a clean and organized space will increase motivation, productivity, and mood. Make documents and important notes that have been buried under other clutter easier to find by organizing your space. Make it a habit for all employees to clean their work station throughout the year.

Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, it’s easy. Here’s a simple list to help you start the cleaning season!

  • Start With Your Computer
1) Unsubscribe to unwanted e-mails

You probably receive lots of emails that you’ve subscribed to, but chances are, you probably also receive even MORE emails from companies that you did not. Your info is being sold to third party marketers and you’re getting lots of unwanted junk mail. These emails are just cluttering your inbox and making it more difficult to find emails that are important to you. The easiest way to clean up your email inbox is to unsubscribe. It will save you time every morning going through your inbox.

2) Clean your desktop

Your desktop is probably a lot less organized than you realize. Screenshots, files, photos, and temporary files that are needed in the short term pile up all over the desktop, and the more you have the more difficult it is to locate those important files you need. Free up your desktop by creating general folders for certain types of files and move all those files into their respective grouped folders. Have a bunch of older content that you need to save but don’t need access to regularly? Create a folder called 2017, for example, and put everything you’ve saved the previous year there. Or move older content onto an external hard drive for long term storage and off of your desktop. Your eyes will thank you.

  • Desk and Drawers
1) Organize your desk

If you continue to throw collect loose articles on your desk, your work space will never appear clean and efficient. It stacks up fast! Every memo, printout, magazine, anything that is deemed nominally important, ends up living on your desk. You might think, “I’ll leave it here for now to read it later”, and then it gets thrown in the “later” pile. Clutter attracts clutter, and you will accumulate more and more things over time. Stop this vicious cycle by addressing everything immediately so it can be discarded of or filed appropriately.

Go through all the papers over your desk and ask yourself, “Do I need this?” If the answer is yes, keep it and find a place to file it out of sight or in a tidy manner. If the answer is no, easy, throw it out! A nice tip to keep in mind when organizing is to keep everything you use daily within arm’s reach. Once you free up your desk you’ll feel energized, your mind you’ll breathe once again, and your productivity will increase.

2) Organize your drawers

It’s easy for drawers to accumulate junk because you don’t see it at all time. But it is a good idea to keep it organized because it can get out of control fast. Start with your catch-all drawer and pencil tray, sure you have lots of things that you threw there, receipts, keys, and the list goes on. Take a look at all these things and see what you really need to keep and the rest put it in the trash. For the bigger drawers, do the same, go over everything you have and see what you really need to keep. Some of those old documents may not be relevant or current anymore. To the recycle bin!

  • Sanitizing
Now it’s time to sanitizing everything. Get a good all-purpose cleaner and a disinfectant. First, you’ll clean the dust with the all-purpose cleaner, and then with a washcloth you’ll use the disinfectant to all germs and bacteria. The key places to clean are your computer, keyboard, inside drawers, and all around your desk. You can have it done in few minutes and your workspace will feel fresh and clean.

Sanitizing

In the time it took you to read this, you could have already made a dent in your spring cleaning project. It won’t take long and the benefits will pay off in spades! You’ll be glad you did it.
