Selecting the Right Hardware Starts with Materials

Think drawer pulls and knobs are easy and don't require much thought? Think again. During the selection process for hardware, you not only have to decide which style best suits your application, but you also have to decide which material and finish will best fit your needs. When you consider handles range from traditional to contemporary in the full spectrum of finish options, it's easy to get overwhelmed by this. Not to mention, the finishing touches are one of (if not THE) most important parts! So, before you make a decision, consider this list of materials and their properties to help you in your journey.

Here at Mockett, we strive for simplicity in design and embrace the sentiments of the classics and blur those lines with contemporary accents for a modern, yet timeless look. Some of our tried and true materials help us to achieve this look.

Stainless Steel: This is a very durable and resistant material. Stainless Steel does not corrode, rust or stain with water. Because of its power to resist corrosion and stains, it is widely used in many applications, such as: food handling products, cutlery, household hardware, and even in industrial equipment. Many food processing plants use stainless steel for pans and storage containers because it can be steam cleaned and sterilized without having to resurface. We highly recommend using stainless steel handles and knobs in potential wet areas like kitchens, bathrooms, patio areas, and hospitals since it can be easily sterilized. Not to mention, it has an ultra-contemporary stylish look and feel that goes with everything!

Aluminum: Aluminum is the most commonly used non-ferrous metal. Its corrosion resistance properties and extremely light weight make aluminum ideal for use in cooking utensils, musical instruments, and more. Aluminum has a distinct look and feel like no other. Unlike cast or machined steel or brass, aluminum has a special allure with a soft inviting touch. Its clean lines and smooth texture can give any old furniture a modern twist.

Mixed Metals: There are many types of metals, and for the most part, they all play nice with one another. In fact, typically, a "metal" product consists of two or more types of metals to provide the best firmness for its purposes. Metal is very malleable and can be shaped in any form without breaking or cracking. Our metal collection varies and consists of brass or steel based composites or in some cases mixed metal compositions like zamac. These mixed metals are then plated or powder coated with the finest quality finishes, including Satin Nickel, Satin Chrome, Polished Chrome, and Antique Bronze to name a few. These finish options are perfect for adding complementary colors or color contrasts to your furniture, all the while keeping a classic and sophisticated look and feel.
